A general term for the most popular style of yoga in the West. This offers a gentle introduction to yoga and its associated benefits for physical and mental well-being. Ide... al for beginners or those who wish to focus on the foundations within a welcoming community based group.
A typical class starts with a seated breathing exercise (pranayama) and warming movements, followed buy yogasana (postures). The class ends with a restorative guided relaxation (savasana / yoga nidra).
Ashtanga is a dynamic breath-led practice which links postures together as a flowing (vinyasa) meditation. It complements many forms of exercise by helping to release tight muscles, improving flexibility and preventing injury. Ashtanga yoga can be modified for a wide range of abilities. It enhances both physical and mental well-being, helping practitioners to cope better with life's challenges.
Beginners are guided progressively through the key principles and postures of the ashtanga primary series. Although moderate fitness and / or previous attendance at a yoga class is an advantage, you don't need to be flexible or athletic to join us for ashtanga yoga.
Classes are taught by Dr Stewart Richmond PhD (Health Science) RTY (Yoga Alliance UK). We also host guest teachers to breathe more variety into our practice.
